Agenda: Addressing Climate-Related Security Risks by Integrating Climate Change into the Security Council's Peacekeeping and Conflict Prevention Strategies

[1]

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a 'threat multiplier' that exacerbates existing conflicts and poses new security challenges, particularly in vulnerable regions. This topic invites the members of the United Nations Security Council to deliberate on the integration of climate change considerations into its peacekeeping, conflict prevention, and resolution strategies. Delegates should explore the development of frameworks for assessing and addressing the security implications of climate-related risks, such as resource scarcity, forced migration, and social unrest. The discussions should also cover the establishment of early warning systems, the promotion of climate-resilient development in post-conflict reconstruction, and the strengthening of international cooperation to address the root causes of climate-induced conflicts. By incorporating climate change into its security agenda, the Security Council aims to promote a more holistic, proactive, and preventive approach to maintaining international peace and security in the face of this global challenge.
